Staining glass

GBB Glass Studio has a great deal of experience with glass staining.

If the glass contains irregularities, such as streaks, different thicknesses or air bubbles, this can interrupt the ingress of light rays in various directions. This results, particularly in coloured glass, in a lively play of light in the interior of a building. Glass staining is a technique that has been used since the Middle Ages.

Because it is a very time-consuming and technically difficult process, you generally only see stained glass windows in churches. One example is the cathedral in Chartres and St John's Church in Gouda. Since the 19th century this technique has also been used to decorate secular buildings within the framework of, among others, the art nouveau and neogothic art movements.
